This was my first time participating in Camp NaNoWriMo. When I decided to do this 50k writing challenge, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to hit the minimum word count per day. I usually don’t set word count goals. For my WIP, I set a monthly chapter goal. For other writing projects like blog posts or Medium articles, I set a deadline for when I want a rough draft done.
I have enjoyed this challenge. I struggle some days to get motivated to write. Every day so far during Camp NaNoWriMo, I have been motived to write. Some days I achieved daily word count by 3 pm! I edited/rewrote six chapters in the first week. This normally takes me a month to complete.
This first week so far, I have hit the minimum word count per day. The count is roughly 1,600 words. This week my total was 14,250 words. Below I have the breakdown:
Date | Wordcount |
July 1st | 2,661 |
July 2nd | 2,493 |
July 3rd | 1,674 |
July 4th | 1,803 |
July 5th | 1,784 |
July 6th | 1,995 |
July 7th | 1,840 |
I have had some challenges this week. I thought my laptop died on me on the third day of the writing challenge. I keep all my documents on a USB drive because I always know where they are. I’m not ok with keeping all my documents on cloud storage.
So I am thankful that I save my documents often. Auto restore brought the document back and I only lost 100 words instead of almost two pages. Now for that specific chapter, I have two documents. In the near future, I think I will start backing up documents elsewhere.
One feature I do like is as you record your word counts per day, it adjusts your projected completion date. If I keep up this pace, I’m projected to be done with 50k words by July 25th.
After Camp, I will assess how much further I have to go. I’m not trying to count my chickens before they hatch but I might be able to get this second draft done by the end of the year. I will be satisfied with a huge amount being completed. I started making the second draft of my Sci-Fi WIP my priority to finish back in March.
I look forward to the next week of rewrites and edits ahead of me!
